2012 Art Safari September 3 - 7, South Africa Places are now available on the 2012 Africa Geographic Art Safari in South Africa. We will stay at The Bush House in Madikwe Game Reserve and will sketch on game drives or at the lodge waterhole. 5 guest places are available. Any level of sketching experience is just fine! From Sketch to Studio December 2011, Audubon Greenwich, CT This exhibit will feature my African and North American field sketches as well as my larger watercolor and acrylic ink studio paintings. An Opening Reception will be held on Saturday December 3rd from 1-4pm and I will give a 30-minute lecture at 2pm. 15% of sales will benefit Audubon Greenwich and 15% will benefit African conservation projects. 1st Part of Tanzanian Conservation Expedition Completed July 2011 I recently returned from Tanzania where I visited the African People & Wildlife Fund (APW) for 2 weeks, sketching, teaching and learning about the project and the complex conservation issues of the area. My visit coincided with APW's Children's Summer Camp, in which local school children stay for a week to learn about various environmental and conservation issues. Africa`s Painted Dogs – Lecture March 28 2011 Dr Greg Rasmussen, founder and director of the Painted Dog Conservation project (shown at left) will speak about his work conserving African Wild Dogs in Zimbabwe. Explorers Club Seminar February 2011 In February 2011 I was invited to give a Exploration Seminar at the Explorers Club in New York City where I am a member. The seminar, titled Expedition Journals and Sketchbooks, covered the stages of creating an expedition journal, from pre-expedition planning and field tips to post-expedition publicity.
Africa Geographic Art on Safari July 28 - Aug 1 2011, South Africa In late July 2011 I will be leading an Art on Safari trip for Africa Geographic magazine. Blue Wildebeest wins Salmagundi Club Award, November 2010 My Blue Wildebeest watercolor was awarded the Ogden Pleissner Memorial Award for Watercolor at the Salmagundi Club's 127th Annual Members' Exhibition.
Lecture at Wolf Conservation Center November 20, 2010 at 3pm Join me as I speak about my Artists For Conservation Flag Expedition in which I spent 6 weeks at the Painted Dog Conservation project in Zimbabwe, tracking and sketching highly endangered African Wild Dogs. I will contrast finding and sketching the Painted Dogs with finding and sketching wolves during my recent trip to Yellowstone National Park. Click here for details of the Wolf Conservation Center.
Art of Conservation Exhibition Ensnared has been juried into the annual exhibit of work by members of Artists For Conservation. The painting was inspired by my visit to the Painted Dog Conservation project in Zimbabwe and, in particular, the work of the Anti-Poaching Units. From the sale of this painting I was able to donate nearly US$1000 to the Painted Dog Conservation project.
54th National Fall Open Southern Vermont Arts Center, Manchester, Vermont. My painting Darkness has been juried into the 54th National Fall Open exhibition held at the Southern Vermont Arts Center. Guest juror and curator was Gerald Auten. The exhibits runs from Oct 1 - Nov 14th with an Opening Reception on Oct 1st from 4-6pm.
Explorers Club, New York City. In January 2009 I was delighted to be elected a new member of the Explorers Club and in March 2009 was invited to lecture at the club, along with Gregory Rasmussen (Director of the Painted Dog Conservation project).
Animal Planet Video During my Flag Expedition to Zimbabwe to sketch African Wild Dogs, I videoed the rescue of an elephant calf from a drinking trough. Animal Planet subsequently used the video as part of their "Untamed & Uncut" series (episode 9). Click on the photo to see my video.
Alison Nicholls wins Medal of Excellence At the 1st Annual Artists For Conservation exhibition, I received a Medal of Excellence for "Sable Drinking". The medal was awarded during the opening weekend of the show at the Hiram Blauvelt Art Museum, in Oradell, New Jersey. I also gave a talk about my recent Flag Expedition to Zimbabwe. The AFC show, titled "The Art of Conservation" runs until December 21st 2008.
Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, Charleston, South Carolina - Feb 2008 & 2009 I exhibited my watercolors at the largest wildlife art & nature show in the US. Salmagundi Club - June 2007 In June I was accepted as an Artist Member of the Salmagundi Club, located on Fifth Avenue in New York City.
